A Collection of 18th and early 19th Century Drum Beatings

This book includes translations all of known English/American drum beatings (marches, quicksteps, and troops) from the late-18th century and early-19th century.

These resources include:

  • Benjamin Clark’s MS (American, c. 1790)
  • Issac Day’s MS (American, c. 1790)
  • “Drummer’s Book of Music”, often referred to as the Gardner MS or Lovering MS (American, c. 1800)
  • The Young Drummers Instructor (British, c. 1780)
  • “Drum Beatings” MS (British, c. 1780)
  • Charles Ashworth, A New, Useful and Complete System of Drum Beating (American, 1812)
  • Charles Robbins, The Drum and Fife Instructor (American, 1812)
  • Samuel Potter, The Art of Beating the Drum (British, 1815)
  • Rumrille & Holton, The Drummer’s Instructor; or Marital Musician (American, 1817)
  • Levi Lovering, The Drummers Assistant for the Art of Drumming (American, 1818)
  • David Hazeltine, Instructor in Martial Music (American, 1817).
  • Alva Robinson, Massachusetts Collection of Martial Musick (American, 1820)

All interpretations are written in clean, modern notation.

The book is organized into 3 sections – Common Time, Triple Time, and Compound Time. Each section includes a brief history of the meter and tempo.

Each section is further broken down into types of music. For example, Compound Time is broken into Flam Accent based tunes, Double Drag beatings, and mixed beatings. These sub-sections include explanations of the style and exercises for major rudiments.

Further, each sub-section contains an explanation of this style’s “rules”. The rules are elaborated on each page of music to aid in the drummer’s ability to quickly breakdown and memorize the pieces.
